Galena Fire and forest fires before Spring officially arrives

As we were preparing for our first camping trip, including writing the first podcast for Season 2 for In The Field Camping, of course the forest fire season of 2012 was top of mind.  Unfortunately, it seems forest fire season 2013 may have begun before Spring has officially “sprung”.  Below is a very active Twitter feed with some great pictures.

The Galena Fire (first called the Soldier Canyon Fire) started on Friday, March 15th on the northwest side of Horsetooth Reservoir in northeastern Colorado.  As of 8pm MDT here is a rough map of the area, which shows it’s relation to the reservoir, Fort Collins, and the two campgrounds in the area (Inlet Bay and South Bay).

Apparently there is also a fire burning near Laporte.  The constantly updating information can be found at this Larimer County link and

There is no Inciweb page for this fire.

The weather is supposed to change Friday night into Saturday with higher humidity and rain possible.

For reference, below is a map of the eastern part of the massive High Park Fire that burned in 2012.  It was just west of the Galena Fire area.
