ITF006: KOA Kampgrounds and forest fires

We discussed Kampgrounds of America (KOA) and the pluses and minuses of these locations, including the KOA’s we’ve visited: WyomingDevils Tower, Rock Springs/Green River, and Jackson Hole/Snake River.  ColoradoRoyal Gorge/Canon City, Cotopaxi/Arkansas River, Gunnison, and the now defunct Durango North/Ponderosa (now known as the Durango Riverside Resort) and New Castle/Glenwood Springs (now known as Elk Creek) KOA’s.  New MexicoLas Vegas.  ArizonaWilliams/Exit 167/Circle Pines.

Also discussed were forest fires, fire restrictions, and fire bans.  NOTE:  This episode was recorded prior to some new fire restrictions for Colorado, and an all out fire ban in Larimer County.  To be clear, no campfires are allowed in Larimer County until September 30th.

Another quick note of THANKS for all the downloads we’ve received.  After just 5 shows, In The Field Camping Podcast been downloaded in 34 36 different states in the U.S. (plus the District of Columbia) as well as the following countries: United Kingdom, Croatia, China, New Zealand, Canada, Ireland, Denmark, South Korea – and Japan and Germany.

High Park Fire

UPDATE 7/3/12 5:00pm – The High Park Fire is 100% contained, 87,284 acres were burned.  Most trailheads, campgrounds, and picnic areas have been reopened.  Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests have updated their website to show the impact to campgrounds and recreational areas.  You can see it here. Little Sand Fire

UPDATE 6/22/12: The fire has grown to 17,280 acres with 30% containment, growth potential is HIGH.  Cause of fire is lightning.  Evacuations remain in effect for residents of the Weminuche Valley.

A fire in southwest Colorado called the Little Sand Fire is burning about 13 miles northwest of Pagosa Springs, CO.  It is also not far from where the massive Missionary Ridge Fire burned near Vallecito Reservoir exactly ten years ago. Continue reading
